Most of the issues I can help with are things you probably think you shouldn’t need to pay someone to help you with. Either you think your institution should provide the support you need. Or you think your supervisor or colleagues should be able to help. Why isn’t the careers service better? Or the research support office? Why aren’t the demands more reasonable?
Sometimes you just think that there is something wrong with you. You are smart and you got this far, you should be able to manage your time better, say no without feeling guilty, send that article off, or whatever.
In an ideal world, my job would be redundant. It is not an ideal world.
It’s okay to ask for help
There is nothing wrong with you. It’s normal to struggle sometimes.
The demands are what they are. The support is what it is. And neither is likely to be ideal.
It’s also okay if you just don’t like the kind of support available and want something else. Your priorities and your employer’s priorities don’t always align even when your objectives overlap considerably. Sometimes you want support from someone who is clearly in your corner.
I want to help
I got into this because I saw the need for support and had the skills to provide that support. The question you need to ask yourself is, would the difference getting my help makes be valuable to you?
My approach isn’t right for everyone but if it is right for you, I’d love to help.
